I first came across Cicely Saunders in print, and was enthralled to discover ‘palliative care’, where the concerns of a patient and their family all were considered by a multidisciplinary team.

Later, I was privileged to meet and work with Cicely, and plan with her the creation of this Institute, as well as learn from our many discussions on medicine, poetry and care.

The Welsh Dresser in the picture was my grandmother’s; one photo shows her on her motor-bike. You can also see my mother, a sculpture by a friend, and a plant from Genoa, grown from a cutting.
